You're Bleeding Us Dry

After a very racist comment directed to me, I decided to paint a picture and a second part to my dad's painting. The comment stated that "Puerto Ricans are bleeding the US dry." In this image, I represent the history of abuse Puerto Rico has endured from colonialism. Spain and the US are significant components to these, which history is deeply rooted. The cacique's necklace being destroyed with the coming of Christianity. The machete and chains represent the enslavement of both Taino and African peoples. The red mark on the island being Hurricane Maria and the Taino symbols show our love for our history despite the struggles. The flags both represent Puerto Rican strength through protest against oppression.

This piece is inspired by one of my dad's paintings!
